Les traces d’un voyage effectu\u00e9 il y a des ann\u00e9es pour voir toutes les peintures de Vermeer se r\u00e9v\u00e8lent au contact d’une situation, d’une parole, d’une sensation. Il en d\u00e9coule parfois de courts textes dont certains para\u00eetront ici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je suis au t\u00e9l\u00e9phone avec mon cousin. Nous nous t\u00e9l\u00e9phonons une fois par an. Pour un \u00e9v\u00e9nement. Pour le nouvel an. Nous ne sommes plus jeunes. Il a quinze ans de plus que moi. Il est l’a\u00een\u00e9 de notre g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, je suis la derni\u00e8re.
Nous prenons des nouvelles. La litt\u00e9rature ne l’int\u00e9resse pas mais il lit mes livres. Il attache beaucoup d’importance \u00e0 la famille, \u00e0 ce que font les gens de sa famille. Lui-m\u00eame a \u00e9t\u00e9 un brillant homme d’affaires et il recherche toujours de nouveaux motifs de fiert\u00e9 familiale.
Il n’a pas perdu son assurance de chef. Il me demande les dates de Vermeer. Il me dit, bien s\u00fbr tu as vu La jeune fille \u00e0 la perle<\/em> et lu le livre de Tracy Chevalier : un chef-d’\u0153uvre. Je ne dis pas que j’ai repos\u00e9 le livre au bout de vingt pages.
Il me demande si je me souviens du Vermeer au mur du salon de nos oncle et tante de Paris. Il ne dit pas \u00abla reproduction de Vermeer\u00bb, il dit \u00able Vermeer\u00bb. Non je ne me souviens pas d’un tableau de Vermeer dans cet appartement qui s’est pourtant inscrit en moi puissamment. Je pense que mon cousin exag\u00e8re, qu’il veut toujours tout relier \u00e0 la famille. Je me dis qu’il a invent\u00e9 l’existence de ce tableau pour faire le malin. Il me dit une sc\u00e8ne de repas. Il n’y a pas de sc\u00e8ne de repas chez Vermeer. J’\u00e9voque La jeune fille endormie<\/em>, La liseuse<\/em> de Dresde \u00e0 cause des coupes de fruits sur la table. Je dis c’\u00e9tait peut-\u00eatre un autre peintre hollandais ? Il dit non, je suis certain que c’\u00e9tait Vermeer. Il se demande si le tableau \u00e9tait sur toile, il pense qu’il \u00e9tait plut\u00f4t sur bois. Il me demande s’il existe des Vermeer peints sur bois. On dirait qu’il ne fait pas la diff\u00e9rence entre l’\u0153uvre authentique et sa reproduction. Il veut savoir si La jeune fille \u00e0 la perle<\/em> \u00e9tait vraiment la servante du peintre. Je r\u00e9ponds qu’on sait peu de choses de Vermeer, on sait le nombre de ses enfants. Onze enfants ! Mon cousin n’en revient pas. On parle de Delft dont il a admir\u00e9 les canaux. J’\u00e9voque les tableaux c\u00e9d\u00e9s au boulanger \u00e0 la mort du peintre pour payer la dette de pain.
Nous continuons \u00e0 bavarder, \u00e0 \u00e9voquer des souvenirs. On dirait que cette \u00e9vocation de Vermeer nous a rapproch\u00e9s. Et tout d’un coup il dit \u00e7a y est, je me rappelle. Ce n’\u00e9tait pas une sc\u00e8ne de repas, c’\u00e9tait un homme et une femme assis face \u00e0 face \u00e0 une table, un homme dans un habit rouge coiff\u00e9 d’un grand chapeau qui lui faisait de l’ombre. Instantan\u00e9ment alors je revois Le soldat et la jeune fille souriant<\/em>, la pi\u00e8ce, les meubles, le long buffet en bois clair au-dessus duquel \u00e9tait accroch\u00e9 le tableau ; il s’agissait d ‘une reproduction sur une esp\u00e8ce de toile avec un rembourrage dessous, quelque chose qui ne se fait plus, qu’on trouverait affreusement kitsch aujourd’hui. C’est incroyable, j’ai contempl\u00e9 cette peinture plusieurs fois \u00e0 la Frick collection de New York o\u00f9 elle se trouve aujourd’hui, je l’ai \u00e9norm\u00e9ment regard\u00e9e, aim\u00e9e, j’ai lu, \u00e9crit \u00e0 son sujet \u2013 je pense souvent \u00e0 ce tableau. Et c’est seulement ce soir de d\u00e9cembre, parce que mon cousin dans son fauteuil \u00e0 oreilles \u00e0 l’autre bout de la France me soutient l’existence dans son souvenir de quelques chose qui m’a d’abord sembl\u00e9 \u00eatre une erreur ou un mensonge, que r\u00e9appara\u00eet, soudain, tr\u00e8s net, le tableau au mur de cet appartement que j’ai des centaines de fois cru reconstituer mentalement avant de m’endormir. J’avais oubli\u00e9 Le cavalier et la femme souriant<\/em> tandis qu’ils s’inscrivaient dans ma m\u00e9moire par un autre chemin que je n’emprunte que ce soir, cinquante ans apr\u00e8s. Ils \u00e9taient l\u00e0, c’est tout. Je ne trouvais le tableau ni beau ni laid, il faisait simplement parti d’un d\u00e9cor o\u00f9 j’aimais \u00eatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
