\u00c0 SantaVeine, il y a un ranch. Chaque ann\u00e9e, on f\u00eate la Saint-Sang \u2014 \u00e0 cause des dragonniers qui y poussent. Mais Ceruz Blanchi en donne une origine diff\u00e9rente :

Un homme surgit d\u2019un sentier.

Un mois passa.
On rapporta qu\u2019on avait vu l\u2019enfant courir dans un champ. On accusa les fr\u00e8res d\u2019avoir d\u00e9pens\u00e9 l\u2019or en filles et en alcool. Alors ils retourn\u00e8rent \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 de la plaine qui montait vers Ecuador. Le soleil couchant les aveuglait.
\u00ab Est-ce que cette ombre, c\u2019est Desab\u00e8s ? \u00bb
C\u2019\u00e9tait comme un mirage qui tremblait devant eux.
Ils entendirent la m\u00eame voix : \u00ab N\u2019allez pas plus loin. Au-del\u00e0, c\u2019est dangereux. \u00bb
\u00ab Nous sommes venus chercher ce que tu nous dois. \u00bb
\u00ab De quoi parles-tu ? \u00bb
\u00ab Tu t\u2019\u00e9tais engag\u00e9. \u00bb
\u00ab Je ne te reconnais pas. Approche. \u00bb
Marcos et Juan avanc\u00e8rent. Le soleil les aveuglait. Ils marchaient droit vers la voix qui les guidait : \u00ab Plus pr\u00e8s. Encore. Avance. \u00bb
Soudain, le sol c\u00e9da sous leurs pieds. Ils s\u2019enfonc\u00e8rent jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la taille, puis jusqu\u2019au cou. La lise. Une boue \u00e9paisse les aspirait lentement.
\u00ab Aide-nous ! \u00bb hurlaient les deux fr\u00e8res.
L\u2019ombre de l\u2019homme se d\u00e9tacha du soleil. Il disparut un instant, puis revint. Il portait un tronc qu\u2019il lan\u00e7a comme un ponton au-dessus de la lise. Il avan\u00e7a lentement dessus.
Il s\u2019accroupit devant Marcos. \u00ab Que fais-tu ? Tire-moi de l\u00e0 ! \u00bb criait Marcos.
L\u2019homme l\u2019examina. \u00ab Oui, je te reconnais maintenant. C\u2019est bien moi que tu as pay\u00e9. Tu as raison, je te suis redevable. \u00bb
Il sortit de sa ceinture un couteau.
Il enserra la t\u00eate de Marcos entre ses genoux, comme dans un \u00e9tau. Saisit la paupi\u00e8re gauche. La trancha d\u2019un geste net. Marcos hurla. L\u2019homme r\u00e9p\u00e9ta le geste pour le deuxi\u00e8me \u0153il. Puis il se d\u00e9pla\u00e7a sur le tronc et fit de m\u00eame avec Juan.
Le soleil \u00e9tait rouge.
On dit que l\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, \u00e0 SantaVeine, les feux bact\u00e9riens \u00e9pargn\u00e8rent les arbres et les brebis n\u2019agnel\u00e8rent aucun mort-n\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
